ResultsSample characteristicsThe sample consisted of 29 (27%) men and 77 (73%)women. The mean age of the sample was 81 (SD = 5.3;age range: 67–96 years). The majority were widow/ers(62%). Forty-four percent had a historyof cardiovascular disease. The majority of elderlyparticipants lived with family members (79%). Patientcharacteristics are summarized in Table 1.The average number of home environmental riskfactors for falls before intervention was 15(SD = 3.06), while the average number of homeenvironmental risk factors for falls after interventionwas 11 (SD = 2.58). A statistically significantdifference (Table 2) was found in the number of homeenvironmental risk factors for falls before and afterintervention (p < 0.001).Among the most frequent home environmental riskfactors for falls before intervention werethe following: no hip protector; no edge protectorson edges of furniture; no window safety locks; nonight lights (bedroom, hallway, toilet); no handrailsnext to the door; emergency numbers not placed near
