Fretting occurs wherever short amplitude reciprocating sliding between contacting surfaces issustained for a large number of cycles. It results in two forms of damage: surface wear anddeterioration of fatigue life. The extent of wear and surface damage is much greater thansuggested by the magnitude of sliding distance. Reciprocating movements as short as 0.1 [µm]in amplitude can cause failure of the component when the sliding is maintained for onemillion cycles or more
