In order to conduct the “vegetation sweep,” the aerial insect net is held extended outward and downward in front of the investigator, and the figure 8 sweeping motion used. This vegetation sweep is accomplished by sweeping the net over and along vegetation near the remains. Generally, a sweep of the vegetation 5 to 10 f (1.5 to 3 m) from the remains and in a 360° circle around the remains is completed. All collected insects from this sweep can fist go into the kill jar, and later be transferred into a single vial with an 80% ETOH solution, and marked with the companion dual-labeling system described below.
