Deforestation to build farms or pastures or other reasons can lead to emissions, as trees release the carbon they have been storing when they are cut down. Approximately 12 million hectares of forest are destroyed every year. Due to the absorption of carbon dioxide by forests, destroying them also limits nature's ability to release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Deforestation, combined with agricultural and other land use changes, accounts for about a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions.
