Stock layer thicknesses are set at roughly 2-3 times the
average particle size; a 20-40mm powder mixture with a
30mm average and Gaussian distribution is optimized when
printed using approximately 100mm (,0.00400) layers.
Excessive layer thickness will result in poor resolution and
stair-stepping (Gebhardt, 2003), whereas, insufficient layer
thickness will produce inadequate powder spreading thereby
leading to a lack of new material for successive cross-sections.
