DiscussionThere is a substantial body of research suggesting that raising a child with ASD is associated with elevated levels of family chaos and distress, increased parenting stress, and decreased parenting self-efficacy. Comprehensive interventions for ASD should address these larger issues, as systemic environmental changes appear necessary to ensure maintenance of treatment gains and improve longterm outcomes of therapy. However, family outcomes of ASD intervention are rarely assessed. This study assessed 64 families of adolescents with high-functioning ASD to determine whether involvement in the PEERS program would facilitate decreased family chaos, decreased parenting stress, and increased parenting efficacy.
