Maternal TreatmentThere is no evidence that any specific treatment improves maternal symptoms or fetal outcome. Treatments that may be considered to provide symptomatic relief are as follows:• Topical Emollients e.g. calamine lotion, aqueous cream with menthol.• Antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine which may provide night-time relief due to the sedative effect• Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UCDA). This is the most commonly prescribed agent for symptomatic relief in the UK. There is a lack of robust data for improvement of pruritis, protection against fetal risks or fetal death; and women should be made aware of this. UCDA is not licensed for use in pregnancy but there are no reports of adverse effects. The recommended dose is 500-1500mg daily in 2-3 divided doses.• Other treatments such as dexamethosone have been advocated in severe OC. It is recommended that women with severe disease requiring additional treatment should be referred to a consultant in maternal medicine for specialist advice.
