Higher salt concentrations of the medium increase its osmolarity, which is likely to have resulted in hyper osmotic shock to E. colicells causing growth suppression. Consequently, the importanceof increasing the salt concentration of medium on the growth ofE. coli became more apparent when the temperature was raisedfrom 37°C (optimum temperature for growth of E. coli) to 44°C. Itwas concluded that increasing the salt concentration in themedium partially overcame the inhibition of growth of E. coli athigh temperature.
