The advent of the zebrafish lateral

The advent of the zebrafish lateral line system as a valid platform to screen for ototoxic agents has enabled us to efficiently identify novel hair cell toxins from several libraries of FDA-approved drugs and related compounds. Our initial screen of 1,040 compounds in the US Drug Collection library uncovered 21 toxic compounds – seven known ototoxins and 14 additional compounds with previously unrecognized hair cell toxicity [40].
