The effect of two different strategies aiming at increasinghousehold source-separation of food waste were assessed througha case-study in a residential area in Sweden were investigated; (a)use of written information distributed as leaflets amongst households and (b) installation of source-segregation equipment inkitchens, with the aim of increasing convenience sorting of foodwaste. Results show that distribution of written information material suggest that this campaign not resulted in neither a significantincreased amount of separately collected food waste, nor anincreased source-separation ratio. However, after installation ofsorting equipment in all households in the area, both the sourceseparation ratio as well as the amount of separately collected foodwaste increased vastly. Changes were consistent also months afterthe installation of sorting equipment in the area. Results supportprevious findings emphasising the importance of accessibility, convenience and existence of necessary infrastructure to participate inhousehold waste recycling. However, waste management systemsrelying on source-separation must recognize the importance ofconvenience for waste sorting also inside the very household. Findings in the present study can also be seen in the light of a construction of social norms around waste recycling, which through thestrategy used in this case-study are introduced in the householdin a very concrete manner.
