MPAs are an integral part of RBM because they can serve to mitigate local stresses, replenish coral reef food webs, stimulate herbivory, and accelerate recovery. The whole array of habitat types must be included in MPAs to enhance biodiversity and functional redundancy, interventions that focus on stressors, and preserve interconnection between healthy and damaged reefs. Furthermore, local community participation and knowledge should be embraced in MPA designs.
