The sound-speed results, shown in figure 2b, reflect the various ways that waves can propagate through the crystal: at any angle with respect to the c-axis, and as either longitudinal pressure waves (in which the atoms vibrate parallel to the direction of wave propagation) or two kinds of transverse shear waves (in which they vibrate in one of the two directions perpendicular to the direction of wave travel).
