Tugu Khatulistiwa (Equator Monument) is one landmark worth visiting when in Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan province. It is interesting to note that one's shadow will disappear at this location. Naturally, this phenomenon only happens at certain times when the sun is at its culmination spot, and when it falls exactly on the equator line, obviating the casting of any shadows. In a year, this natural phenomenon will happen only twice, in late March and September. In recent years events organized to signal this condition have taken place. Apart from the disappearing shadows, visitors can also witness a standing egg in the area of Tugu Khatulistiwa. It began in 1928 when an international expedition from the Netherlands visited Pontianak with the purpose to determine the exact equator dot in this city. Tugu Khatulistiwa was thus erected in the form of a pole with an arrow sign above it. In 1930 a circle was added on the upper part. Eight years later, the monument was modified with the addition of Belian wood, and its height became 4.4 meters
