ResultsWith fewer touch-points of contact between patient and commode, thefinal design dramatically reduces the chance of cross-infection through contact with contaminated surfaces. A detachable plastic shell and robust stainless steel frame make the commode easy to clean and easy to store. The commode has adjustable armrests so patients can slide directly onto it from a bed or chair, and adjustable footrests to help patients to get into and out of the commode. User testing of existing commodes on the market led to an invaluable insight:users felt that they looked like a piece of furniture, an a esthetic that patients found deeply inappropriate in the context of a hospital. The new design deliberately resembles a toilet instead of a domestic armchair, which helps to put patients at ease when using it at the bedside This project has been widely promoted as a great example of how to design for wellbeing and healthcare The design is easier and cheaper to manufacture than existing products on the market, and has under testing demonstrated lower levels of infection under testing
