Results Descriptive analysisTable 1 shows means, standard deviations, alphas, and bivariate correlations of the study variables. The five fears of failure variables were all positively and moderately correlated, and they were all positively and weakly to moderately correlated with perceived psychological stress, reduced sense of accomplishment, emotional exhaustion, and devaluation. The sample reported moderate-to-low levels of burnout symptoms across the five-point Likert scale with means from 2.5 and lower. However, as in previous research, the respective standard deviations of the athlete burnout symptoms indicate that a small number of the sample may be exhibiting more extreme thoughts and feelings indicative of burnout. Using the tentatively suggested subscale scores of 3 (“some- times”) or higher as cutoff, 15.3% (N = 50) of this sample experienced symptoms of emotional/physical exhaustion and signs of higher burnout.
