Tbree fibers were involved in the investigation: 1) a
single-mode nitrogen-doped-silica-core undoped-silicacladding
fiber (cut-off wavelength 1.50 pm, core-claddingindex difference Ann=0.006,0H-group content 0.65 ppm, NHgroup
conent 0.74 ppm), 2) a multimode undoped-silica-core
fiber with an inner F-doped-silica cladding and an outer
undoped-silica cladding (NA=0.24, core diameter 30 pn, OHgroup
content 1.54 ppm), and 3) a multimode undoped-silicacore
F-doped-silica-cladding fiber (KS-4V silica core material,
NA=0.23, core diameter 200 pm, OH-group content 0.28
ppm). The former two fiber preforms were fabricated by the
surface plasma chemical vapour deposition (SPCVD) process
[8], the latter fiber preform, by the plasma outside deposition
(POD) process 191. The fibers were acrylate-coated. The Ndoped
fiber was used in the comparison study of the H2 and D2
effects on the induced absorption spectrum, whereas the two
undoped-core fibers were not loaded with the gases before
irradiation.
