Earnshaw, the former owner of Roar heights, went to Work in Liverpool once and brought back an unidentified gypsy boy, who named him Heathcliff. The little boy, who had taken away the old master's affection for his eldest son Hindley and his daughter Catherine, gradually became resented by Hindley, but had a long-standing relationship with Catherine. After The Old Enshaw's death, Hindley and his wife, Frances, inherited the hill, and in retaliation he demoted Heathcliff to a slave and persecuted him. Catherine, though still in love with Heathcliff, married Edgar Linton, the rich, handsome owner of the house, for money and status, and Heathcliff went away in anger on stormy night.
