WHAT IS DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY?Developmental delay occurs when a child does not achievedevelopmental milestones in comparison to peers of the sameage range. The degree of developmental delay can be furtherclassified as mild (functional age < 33% below chronological age),moderate (functional age 34%–66% of chronological age) andsevere (functional age < 66% of chronological age).(1) A significantdelay is defined as performance that is two or more standarddeviations below the mean on age-appropriate standardisednorm-referenced testing (usually conducted in secondary ortertiary care settings).(2)
