In contrast, we found that the dimensions of fear of failure did not have a statistically significant effect on emotional/physical exhaustion and sport devaluation. This is a salient finding as these dimensions, especially emotional/physical exhaustion, are considered to be at the core of burnout (Gustafsson et al., 2011; Raedeke, 1997). Thus, when interpreting the findings from the variable-centered approach one could argue that fear of failure is associated with higher levels of psychological stress but not with burnout; as without exhaustion one is not considered to be suffering from symptoms of burnout (Gustafsson et al., 2011; Maslach et al., 2001).
