Understanding patterns of adaptation is an important aspect of the developmental psychopathology model (Cummings et al., 2000) and researchers have frequently used growth-curve modeling to investigate how children adapt to their parents’ divorce over time in terms of absolute change, or change in mean levels over time. Lansford et al. (2006) examined trajectories of children’s internalizing and externalizing behavior problems from 1 year prior to 3 years following parental separation, using a group matched on ethnicity, gender and socioeconomic (SES) status as a comparison.
