While overall fatality numbers and rates have generally decreased in recent decades [BLS, 2014], many workplaces are using machines that potentially introduce new risks [Etherton, 2007], and statistics suggest that machines (including forklifts and tractors) still account for 13% of all work-related deaths [BLS, 2014]. To determine if the incidence and circumstances have changed, we examined occupational machine-related fatalities for 1992–2010 and describe these deaths by temporal pattern for worker demographics, machine type (i.e., stationary versus mobile), and industry sector.
