Writing Projects
There are three writing projects in ENG 108, plus a digication essay that takes the place of your final exam. You must submit all writing projects to pass the course. All projects must be ready for collection at the beginning of class on the due date. Computer and printer problems are not valid excuses for late work. For each class day that a project is late, I reserve the right to deduct one letter grade from the final grade on the project.
All drafts of the writing projects should be typed, double-spaced, and stapled. Use Times New Roman or Arial font, one-inch margins, and 12-point font. When you submit the final project folder, please include the final copy of the paper, all previous drafts, your peer edit comments, and copies of all source materials other than the class texts that you used to write the paper.
Brief Description of Writing Projects (You will have a prompt sheet for each assignment):
Project 1: Rhetorical Assessment: in a 5-page paper, you will analyze a persuasive speech using the rhetorical concepts logos, pathos, ethos, and kairos.
Project 2: Classical Argument: in this 5-page paper, you will design your own persuasive essay by using the rhetorical strategies you learned in the first unit. This paper will synthesize information and perspectives as you formulate a logical, cogent stance that is supported through salient claims, diversified research, a refuted counterargument, and astute reasoning. The paper must also be tailored to a resistant audience and demonstrate your ethos as a researcher.
Final Reflection: The course will include a written critical evaluation of your work in lieu of a final exam. In this 2-page letter, you will draw upon your knowledge of rhetorical strategies to attempt to convince me to raise your course grade by a third of a letter.
