To assess the ability of self-control theory to predict the probability of using physical aggression, this study analyzes first the simplified modelinvolving the Low Self-control scale alone. As model 1 in Table 3 indicates, low self-control by itself is a significant predictor of the probabilityof courtship violence (b = .058), even while controlling for age and gender. The effect of age on the probability of using violence is nonsignificant;however, gender does demonstrate a statistically significant influence. Inparticular, being female is predictive of a higher probability of courtshipaggression, a finding consonant with many studies of dating violence thatutilize the Conflict Tactics Scale (see Sugarman and Hotaling, 1989, for areview).l3 These effects of the control variables remain consistent acrossall models tested in the analysis. For model 1, the chi-square (X’ = 51.886,d.f. = 3) is significant, although the value of the corrected pseudo-R2 (R2 =.101) is relatively 10w.14 Nevertheless, it can be concluded that low selfcontrol plays at least some statistically significant role in predicting theprobability of using violence against a dating partner.
