All of the participants answered the Empathy Questionnaire, comprehension subtest of the WAIS-III, and facial valence recognition task. The participants then performed the Irony Comprehension Task. The 40 stories were divided into two versions, and each participant was assessed using one version only (20 storyboards: 10 with ironic statements and 10 with literal statements). The sequence of presentation of the stories was randomized. The participants never had to evaluate the same story twice. The versions were randomized and counterbalanced across subjects. The participants sat 60 cm from the computer screen. The test began after they fully comprehended the instructions. The cartoon strips were presented using one storyboard at a time. On presentation of the last storyboard, in which P2 made acommentary, the participant had to verbally state whether it was an ironic or literal utterance. Eye movements were recorded binocularly using computerized Tobii 1750 equipment (Tobii Technology, Danderyd, Sweden). The Tobii 1750 was connected to a Dell computer with a Pentium 4 processor. TET Server 2.8.5 (Tobii Eye Tracking Server) and Clear View 2.5.1 software were used. Both programs were run using the Windows XP operating system, which enabled the interface of Tobii 1750 with the computer and other programs so that calculations and data analyses could be performed. The cartoon test was presented using JPEG files, with a resolution of 800 600 pixels against a white background.
