You Have to Be Odd to Be Number One – Dr. Seuss

It takes being different to get noticed. Uniformity is not the key to excellence, except possibly in rhythmic dancing! Oprah didn’t get to where she is by imitating Phil Donahue, and Steve Jobs didn’t accomplish the things he did by trying to imitate Microsoft. These people knew that to be the best at something means to set yourself apart, and strive in a way that proves your passion. And you can’t show passion by blending in — you have to show that you really care.
And when you really care enough to put in the time to become the best, it doesn’t leave much room for caring about what other people think. I’ve always thought it was curious that we spend so much of our time and effort in the early parts of our life trying to fit in with our peer groups. Because later in life it seems to become clearer and clearer that what we should be focusing on is how to stand out from the crowd. How to celebrate our difference, and what makes us unique. How to celebrate what makes us special, and what makes us number one!
So today, think about how you can stand out, be number one, and reach your dreams. You just have to be willing to stand apart. You have to be odd enough to be number one.
