M Lan, we’ll fly to Shanghai next week and stay there for about one month. But I was told that transportation has been one of the city’s greatest problems . Is that true?
L that’s ancient history! To my knowledge, besides the convenient ground transportation system, the city has developed a complete rail transport service system.
M oh? Maybe I will use the subway more often..
L yeah, it’s fast, safe and convenient. There are already two subway lines in the city—the People’s Park.
M where does each line start and end?
L subway No. 1 ,for example starts at the Shanghai Railway Station and ends in Xinzhuang, songjiang District, crossing half the city from the north to the south-west.
M the names don’t really help me much now. I want to know if there is a line reaching the Pudong New Area. My company has an office there.
L oh, yes. Line No.2 will soon connects the two international airports in the c ity——Hongqiao Airport in the west and Pudong Airport in the east.
M great! We are frequent flyers , you know. So we want to have an easy time getting to either of the two airports.
L and the third line, the Pearl Light Rail connect most of the residential areas of the city, and it’s supposed to be the most convenient means of transportation for the local citizens.
M I would think so. The subway is much safer , and it helps release the congestion of the city’s ground transportation.
L exactly! I can also show you the route of the Magnetic Levitation Train .it has been in operation for years .
M what? You have a “maglev” of your own!
L yes . we do. It rides as fast as 400 kim per hour and takes you directhy to Pu Dong in Ternational Airport.
M I still find it hard to believe. You know,so far very few countries in the world have such advanced transport facilities.
