The diagnosis of PBC depends upon appropriate serologic and liver biopsy results. Ursodeoxycholic acid (ursodiol, UDCA) is the only approved treatment for PBC and may delay development of end-stage liver disease. Methotrexate and colchicine are other therapies whose efficacy has yet to be elucidated in studies, but which may be added to UDCA in certain cases. Supportive care is similar to that for other onditions with impaired bile metabolism, including supplementation with fat-soluble vitamins. In spite of these measures, most patients will eventually require liver transplantation for prolonged survival.
