Mr Blake's garden looks very nice now. He has been working very hard for a long time. He has been working in his garden since last September. Mr Blake has planted trees and flowers. He has planted vegetables, too. He has mended the old fence. Of course, he hasn't finished yet. He's been working in the garden for a long time and he's still working hard. In one corner of the garden Mr Blake has built a hen-run. He has five hens and they lay lots of eggs. Last week Mr Blake arrived home with a rooster. The rooster looks very fine indeed. Alan, Wendy and Timmy call him 'Doodle'. Do you know why? They call him 'Doodle' because he crows every morning. Every morning everyone in the neighbourhood hears Doodle. "Cock-a-doodle-doo' Cock-a-doodle-doo!" Doodle has been waking Sandy and Sue up every morning. But they don't mind.
Timmy likes Doodle very much. He goes into the hen-run every day. Last Sunday he ran into the house and called his father. "Dad!" he cried. "Come to the hen-run quickly!" "What's the matter, Timmy?" Mr Blake asked. "it's something very strange." Timmy said. "Doodle's laid an egg." "Laid an egg!" Mr Blake cried. "Don't be silly, Timmy. Roosters don't lay eggs!" "But he has laid an egg. Come and see," Timmy said.
Mr Blake went to, the hen-run. Doodle was sitting in the hen-run and Mr Blake picked him up. There was an egg under the rooster. "See," Timmy said. "Doodle's sitting on an egg. He's laid it." "This is very strange," Mr Blake said. He looked at the rooster again. "He can't be a hen. Surely he isn't a hen!"
The next day Timmy called his father again.
