PARIS — For the fourth time in five matches at this French Open, world No. 1 Serena Williams came back from the brink.
The two-time champion here returns to the final at Roland Garros for the first time since 2013, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 winner over No. 23 seed Timea Bacsinszky.
Williams, 33, will meet Lucie Safarova, the No. 13 seed, in the final. Safarova, 28, is making her debut in a Grand Slam final.
Here's how things shook out Thursday.
Scoreline: [1] Serena Williams (USA) def. [23] Timea Bacsinszky (SUI) 4-6, 6-3, 6-0
Williams appeared out of sorts for much of Thursday's second semifinal, strolling gingerly through the court between points and requesting ice towels during change overs on what was the warmest day of the tournament so far, temperatures topping 80 degrees. But trailing 4-6, 2-3, she summoned her champion's best, winning the final 10 games and therefore the match. She's 11-0 in three-set matches this season.
FOR THE WIN
How Rafael Nadal became the tennis version of Allen Iverson
What it means: Williams is back into a Grand Slam final, chasing No. 20 of her career. She trails Steffi Graf, who holds the Open era record of 22. Graf is also the last player to win the calendar-year Slam, winning all four majors in 1988.
A surging Safarova, a 28-year-old with a powerful lefty game, awaits her in the final. They've met eight times, Williams winning all of those, including two on clay. Safarova is the first left-handed women's player in the final here since Monica Seles in 1998.
What Serena said: Williams, via a statement from the tournament, announced she was not well enough to do a post-match news conference.
"I'm so sorry I couldn't make it to press this evening," Williams said in the statement. "I have been feeling unwell for a few days, and after this tough match against Timea, I needed to see the tournament doctor. I am proud to be back in the final here at Roland Garros, in a city that means so much to me. I'm determined to be 100 percent ready for the final against Lucie on Saturday."
Where there's a Will(iams), there's a way: Williams came back from a set deficit in the second, third and fourth rounds, as well. The four come-from-behind wins mark the first time in her career that she has recovered from being a set down in that many matches at a major.
How it happened: Williams played much of the match with a pained look on her face, Bacsinszky winning the first set behind 16 winners to only eight from the American. They traded blows early in the second set, Williams going down by a break at 2-3. But she rocketed a backhand return winner up the line to get the break back, pumping her fist in celebration.
Williams wouldn't look back from there, winning the final three games of the second set and closing it out with an ace and then forced return error.
In the final set, Williams' experience won her through, hitting 12 winners and capturing 86 percent of points on her first serve. She won the match when Bacsinszky sent a backhand approach shot long up the line.
Key stat: It might just be Williams' refusal to go away. It was a bizarre and confounding match from her standpoint, the American telling ESPN after the win that she is struggling with the flu. She belted 37 winners overall, including eight aces and no double faults.
Williams is 19-4 in Grand Slam finals, while Safarova will make her debut. They've met once in a tour final, Williams playing some of the best matches of her career and emerging a 6-0, 6-1 winner in Charleston in 2012
