The Indian Railway system contains several masonry bridges that are more than 100 years old. These bridges have deteriorated both in terms of strength and stiffness for a variety of reasons. The bridges have been designed for live loads and service conditions that have changed drastically with time. Increased axle loads and traffic density have necessitated bridge owners to have the bridge monitored and condition assessed to determine the residual structural strength and identify strengthening measures to be taken for safe performance. Bridge monitoring has become a promising tool for bridge research, maintenance, assessment, and addressing real-time traffic survey issues
