Some of the first species of marine mammals in human care were polar bears, seals, and sea lions. Reports have documented that polar bears were exhibited in western society as early as 1060, walrus in 1608, harbor seals in 1831, and California, Steller, and South American sea lions in 1860s. Some of the earliest recorded cetaceans were the harbor porpoise in 1859, beluga whales in 1860, and the common bottlenose dolphin in 1913. The earliest record for Europe is June 1883 at the Brighton Aquarium. In 1914, the New York Aquarium became the first to exhibit a group of bottlenose dolphins. In 1938, Marine Studios opened to become the world’s first oceanarium. Over the next several decades, dolphin facilities became extremely popular, showcasing dolphins in theatrical shows, educational presentations, and interaction (swim-with) programs. Brookfield Zoo, outside of Chicago, IL opened the first inland dolphinarium in 1961.
