The proportion of enrolled university students who self-identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander is quite small, even decreasing slightly between 2001 (1.93%) and 2014 (1.86%) (Johnson, Cherednichenko & Rose, 2016, p.115). Wilks and Wilson (2016, p. 20) note that this remains below parity with the proportion of Indigenous people to the total Australian population (2.2%). Indigenous students graduating from teacher education join an existing pool of approximately 3100 Indigenous teachers Australia-wide (Johnson et al., 2016). The exact proportion of Indigenous teachers who teach HPE is unknown, as professional teacher associations such as the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) do not keep such records (Dodd, 2016).
