Before any lifts are commenced, all parties, including the crane operator, signalers, riggers and others involved, must refamiliarize themselves with appropriate hand signals. Often signals vary from job to job and region to region. It is best to ensure that everyone is familiar with the hand signals outlined in ANSI/ASME B30.5, Mobile and Locomotive Cranes (see figure 14). OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926.550(a)(4) states that “Hand signals to crane and derrick operators shall be those prescribed by the applicable ANSI standard for the type of crane in use.
