The following audit standards, relevant to maternity services, have been extracted and adapted from NICE (2007) guideline 45 on ‘Antenatal and Postnatal Mental Health’:1. All women, upon initial contact with services, should be asked specific questions about:• Past/present severe mental illness• Previous treatment by a psychiatrist/specialist mental health team including in- patient care• Family history of perinatal mental illness2. a) All women should be asked the 2 questions on pages 2/3:• At the booking visitb) This should be recorded as ‘mental health questions asked √’ (or similar) and a positive or negative response recorded.3. A healthcare professional should consider the provision of social support (e.g. regular individual/group-based support during pregnancy/post-natal period) for all women who:• have symptoms of depression and/or anxiety (that do not meet the threshold of a formal disgnosis but which interfere with personal and social functioning), and• have not had a previous episode of depression.4. All women should receive care through a clinical network (as defined by NICE) set up to deliver perinatal mental health care services.Audit standards relevant only to primary care have been excluded from this document.
