Description errors can be expected to occur wherevercontrol panels are designed so that at a quick glance (or inperipheral vision) the distinctions among controls are notclear enough. Solutions to this problem have long beenknown:1. Arrange instruments and controls in functionalpatterns, perhaps in the form of a flow chart ofthe system.2. Use "shape coding" to make the controls and instruments look and feel different from one another.3. Make it difficult to do actions that can lead tooperations that have serious implications andthat are not reversible.
