The self-management program was developed to (1) provide an assess-ment of a wide variety of variables potentially related to each person's poor sleep, (2) use this assessment in the differential application of treatment strategies, and (3) enhance the person's sense of efficacy in controlling those problems related to good and poor sleep. The assessment and treatment strategies have been described extensively elsewhere (cf. Coates and Thoresen, 1980; Thoresen et al., 1980). One-hour training sessions were held twice weekly for a period of 5 weeks; single weekly sessions followed for another 3 weeks. Each session focused on a specific set of skills, but also provided for review of progress and practice of skills learned in previous sessions, if necessary.
