Change management is a significant yet challenging responsibility for public health managers. Managers first need to appreciate why change is important to their organizations and how change can yield improvements in organizational performance. The current thinking in healthcare management is that organizations—both public and private—need to be more agile and innovativeand be willing to change the way their organizations are designed and operated.30 This is necessary so that managers can better position their organizations for success, add value, and better align their organizations with a changing environment. The role of the public health manager is critical to creating a change oriented organization, with the leadership, culture, and capacity for continuous change and improvement. As other researchers have noted,31 it is important to constantly seek to understand what factors affect public health performance and to make the necessary changes to ensure optimal performance in the future.
