Redondo Beach, the second station, is located at a breakwater at the entrance to a small harbour situated near the head of a large marine canyon. This station, which is likely to receive contaminants from two major sewer outfalls in the area (Fig. 1), as well as flushing from the harbour, exhibited elevated sediment trace metals but not chlorinated hydrocarbons (Word & Mearns, 1979). The third station, White's Point, is inshore from the JWPCP(Joint Water Pollution Control Plant) sewer outfall and sediment in this area is elevated in both trace metals and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The general health of each population was monitored using histopathological and histochemical criteria.
