The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) also has a role in high seas habitat protection. The harmonization of work plans between CBD and CMS integrates CMS and migratory species into the work program and implementation of CBD with regard to protected areas, as well as the ecosystem approach, and the drive to develop indicators, assessments, and monitoring. In addition, CMS focuses on the establishment of regional agreements, which increases its adaptability to regional circumstances, with multijurisdictional marine mammal habitats.
