PerspectivesThe findings of this study support the assumptions of previous researchers that athletes with high fear of failure are likely to experience high levels of psycho- logical stress and that fear of failure might pose a risk of burnout (Sagar et al., 2009, 2010). The present findings are valuable as they highlight the risks of fear of failure in young aspiring athletes. Given that burnout has been associated with a high risk of athletes dropping out of sport (Gustafsson et al., 2011), helping athletes manage their fear of failure effectively is of great interest to coaches, psychologists, and sport organizations (cf. Sagar et al., 2009). It has also been proposed that high fear of failure is not only problematic when the athletes are young, but also its impact can increase as the young athletes get older (Conroy, 2001). Accordingly, designing and implementing adequate psychological interventions for adolescent athletes with high levels of fear of failure is salient.
