The Mammoth honeycrea was first discovered in Hawaii in 1973 and is the only native species in Hawaii. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the number of species exceeded 150 in 1981, and in the next 10 years, the number dropped by another 90 percent.

The main reason for the loss of the Mammoth honeybirds was the disappearance of the hawaiian tourist son, the invasion of predators, cat and mouse hunting by wild boars, and the effects of disease, all of which led to unsuccessful attempts to preserve and breed. According to a new survey, the last time a trace of a mammoth honeybird was found was in 2004.
