Despite the numerous benefits of exercise as part of cancer rehabilitation, the majority of survivors of cancer report that they do not discuss exercise with their treating oncologist or primary care physician during their cancer treatment and recovery. However, research shows that cancer survivors of all ages want their oncologists to initiate discussions about exercise and make appropriate referrals.Survivors prefer to receive information on exercise early in the treatment trajectory and through outthepost-treatment period.Given the benefits of exercise during and after cancer treatments, routine discussions about exercise between oncologists and their older patients who are survivors of cancer, along with appropriate referrals to a qualified exercise physiologist or cancer rehabilitation therapist as needed, could significantly improve prognosis, recovery, and multiple domains of quality of life for older individuals.
