Luther himself is arguably Christianity’s most famous depressive. It is now part of the rich human portrait we have of him, especially from his letters and Table Talk. Luther’s depression is comprehensively treated by a number of his twentieth century biographers and has fascinated psychologists, psychotherapists, historians, playwrights and filmmakers alike. Perhaps this aspect of his life has found such a strong foothold in the modern imagination because it reflects to us the growing depressive crisis we are facing today, showing us the human contours of a sickness we recognise all too well.
