The forbearing, by contrast, endure what is objectionable for the sake of a somewhat different collection of ends and proceed with a distinct hope. Like the tolerant, they intend to maintain the relationship shared with those they endure and the autonomy enjoyed with respect to their differences, and they want their act to express the regard they have for that relationship. But in addition to these ends, they also intend to be reconciled with those from whom they are divided, or at the very least, this is their hope, and they endure what they despise for the sake of this additional end. Unlike the tolerant, they are not content with a relatively modest union of judgment and love, one that admits of distance and difference.
