The potent role of Facebook to connect geographically distant family members is reflected in the quote from Aimee, one of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Melbourne, Australia, who I interviewed for this research project. Aimee, a 27-year-old education consultant in Melbourne, has been living away from her family since 2011. She has three siblings who are spread across continents. She has a brother who is based in Singapore, a sister in Dubai, and a younger brother in the Philippines. Her parents, who are separated, are based in the Philippines. Given their dispersed family arrangement, Facebook is key to forging and cementing ties. For instance, she regularly checks Facebook through her smartphone or iPad to stay in touch with her loved ones.
