Perhaps the most important finding of the discussion in this chapter is the fact that while people derive tremendous benefits from good quality aquatic habitats, and for this very reason many human settlements are located on the shores of such water bodies, degraded habitats increase hazards and risks connected with the uses of such habitats for water supply, drainage and flood protection, conveyance/disposal of treated urban wastewaters, and ecological functions.
