Although the incidence of speech and voicedisorders in individuals with IPD is extremelyhigh, past reports stated that only 3 to 4% ofthese individuals receive speech treatment.7One explanation for this discrepancy maybe that carryover and long-term treatmentoutcomes have been disappointing. In fact, conventional wisdom has been that speechtreatment changes that occur in the treatmentroom disappear on the way to the parkinglot.88,89 This problem of carryover andlong-term treatment outcomes has been observed consistently over a wide range of speechtreatments applied to this population.54 Theseapproaches include training in control of speechrate, prosody, loudness, articulation, and respiration.17 Treatment with instruments suchas delayed auditory feedback, voice amplification devices, and pacing boards have also beenof limited long-term success.18,54,89
