A number of articles that deal with the relationship between tourism and economic growth are also relevant to the present study, mainly due to the methodological challenges of uncovering a robust relationship between tourism, growth and level of development. For example, Hazari and Sgro (1995) developed a dynamic model showing that tourism can have positive effects on the long-term growth in a small economy. They proved that tourism makes non-traded goods and services exportable, hence promoting domestic welfare and growth.Balaguer and Cantavella-Jorda´ (2002)have examined the role of tourism in the Spanish long-run economic development by using Johansen’s cointegration methodology and Granger causality tests. Granger causality tests confirmed the existence of a robust relationship between economic growth and tourism expansion.
