● Installation of a drainage structure in the lower wetland to allow initial drainage of polluted, hypersaline water from the effectively closed-off wetland system, in order to prevent the ongoing accumulation of pollutants including dissolved salts in the wetlands and to allow the regulation of maximum water levels in the wetland as a whole, thereby facilitating the rehabilitation of drowned saltmarsh habitat and increasing areas of shallow wading habitat upstream.
● Reconnection of the Wasit wetlands with source areas of fresher water upstream as follows:
● removal of dumped material in the former reedbed channel upstream of the new highway
● removal of impediments to surface flow in Phase 2 including large berms and infilled channels at road crossings
