Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR): Strong evidence indicates
that disasters are on the rise. Their costs are also increasing—more than half of
the planet’s 20 costliest calamities have occurred since 2001. Further, television
and the Internet bring the incident pain and suffering into our living rooms.Yet, we struggle to transfer best logistics and supply chain practice to the HADR setting. Equally important, HADR provides the opportunity today to evaluate issues that will be important to tomorrow’s business community—for example, swift trust and borderless, temporary supply chains.
